Welcome to the RefChat Training Guide!

This guide contains information for monitoring the library's reference chat module using LibAnswers. These settings are NOT applicable if you are assigned to monitor the main LibChat for Chaffey College ("Front Page and Canvas Chat")

Logging into RefChat

You can connect to LibChat by clicking "Sign In" on the LibAnswers Dashboard OR by selecting LibChat > Connect from the Dashboard menu.

When you connect with LibChat, the LibChat Operator Console opens in a new tab on your browser.  You will need to keep this tab open to keep the channel available to students.

Settings

  • Once connected to LibChat, change your status to "Internal"
  • Select "Online" for the Reference department
  • Select "Notify" for the Library queue

Logging Out of LibChat

TO EXIT LIBCHAT: Select "OFFLINE" as your status and close the tab or window. If you exit the window or browser without selecting "OFFLINE", you may still appear as "ONLINE". After selecting "OFFLINE" as your status, you can log off and exit your browser window. Also set your status as "OFFLINE" anytime you leave your computer or the Reference Desk unattended for more than a few minutes.
