  • Ethnicity, a member of an ethnic minority in the community
  • Religion, a member of a stigmatized religious group
  • Sexuality, a member of the LGBTQ community
  • Occupation, any occupation, including unemployed, single mother, etc.
  • Disability/Health, any disability or health issues
  • Lifestyle & Political conviction, some examples include homeless, atheist, vegan, etc.

How to Participate in the Human Library Essay Contest

The purpose of the essay contest is to encourage students to reflect and write about their experience at the Human Library event.

Essays are due May 1, 2017 at 4:00pm. Be sure to type your name, email, phone number, and student ID number on your essay. Please hand in your essay to the Rancho, Chino or Fontana Library or email them to mellanie.reeve@chaffey.edu. For more information contact Mellanie Reeve by email (mellanie.reeve@chaffey.edu) or phone at (909) 652-6806.

Choose one of the following questions and write a 1-2 page double-spaced essay:

1. Write an essay briefly summarizing the experience itself and then talk about its importance to you. Did this person give you helpful advice or feedback? What did you discuss that you feel was important?

2. If you want to be more creative with the essay, you can write a story about your Human Library experience.

3. During the Human Library event, did you learn something new about a culture or identity different from your own? What did you learn and how does it relate to your own culture and identity?

4. Choose one of the quotes, listed below, to use as an inspiration to write about your experience at the Human Library event and how that reflects on your life experiences.
