Drug War Facts is a project of Common Sense for Drug Policy, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to reforming drug policy and expanding harm reduction. CSDP disseminates factual information and comments on existing laws, policies and practices.

The movement started in the 1970s and is still evolving today. Over the years, people have had mixed reactions to the campaign, ranging from full-on support to claims that it has racist and political objectives.

Began by Ethan Nadelmann, the DPA developed from the LIndesmith Institute at Princeton University, which called for different perspectives on drug use and abuse. This was one of the first initiatives funded by the George Soros Open Society Foundation. The vision of the organization states that "Our mission is to advance those policies and attitudes that best reduce the harms of both drug use and drug prohibition, and to promote the sovereignty of individuals over their minds and bodies."
